This document outlines the NHS Right to Choose policy for autism and ADHD assessments for children under 18 in England, detailing how families can access accredited providers and the importance of choosing such providers to ensure quality assessments and appropriate treatment. Right to Choose explained: Patients in England have the right to choose an alternative NHS commissioned provider for health services at referral or if waiting exceeds 18 weeks, but this does not apply for second opinions. This right includes autism and ADHD assessments for children under 18. Only a child’s GP can make a Right to Choose referral, not parents or schools. Accredited providers and standards: The Integrated Care Board (ICB) accredits providers for ADHD and autism assessments who meet specific standards including compliance with NICE guidelines, quality audits, and invoicing rules. Accredited providers are recognized by local health and council authorities, guaranteeing quality. Providers must assess children face-to-face and cannot initiate medication, which is managed by a specialist NHS trust. Lists of accredited providers: As of January 2026, three providers —Healios, The Family Psychologist, The Owl Centre—are accredited to conduct ADHD assessments for ages 6-17 and autism assessments for ages 5-17. Virtual assessments are not endorsed, and medication initiation is referred to Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust. Choosing non-accredited providers risks: Families can choose providers not accredited by the ICB but risk receiving assessments of insufficient quality, which may delay support and prevent access to medication treatment through the NHS. Accredited providers ensure quality assessments and proper treatment pathways. Additional information and support resources are available through NHS and local council websites.
